Buddy Stem Activity

Image result for iggy peck architectToday we read the book ‘Iggy Peck Architect’. We watched how the Lego Masters used Lego to create really strong bridges and discussed some of the reasons they were so strong.

Our challenge was to build a strong bridge that met a set criteria. We designed our bridges first and then we needed to redesign as we went. We then tested our designs by stacking dictionaries on top. We used rulers to make sure that our bridge met the correct measurement.


We had fun working with our buddies today:

During this activity we learnt:

  • Ethan: I learnt that you need to put supports in the right place for a bridge.
  • Hannah: I learnt that you need really strong bases. I liked working in a group and how everyone listened to each other and agreed on ideas.
  • Linda: I liked building the bridge because it is my favourite.
  • Mikayla: Our plan helped us to build. We think our bridge is strong.
  • Will and Ava: I learnt how to build a bridge.
  • Issy: It is hard to be a leader of Prep children and keep them in one spot.
  • Eric: I learnt how to make a bridge really strong.

Buddy Time – Scratch Jnr

Today we worked with our buddies to create a conversation on the iPad App, Scratch Jnr.

ScratchJr is an introductory programming language that enables young children to create their own interactive stories and games. Children snap together graphical programming blocks to make characters move, jump, dance, and sing. Children can modify characters in the paint editor, add their own voices and sounds, even insert photos of themselves — then use the programming blocks to make their characters come to life.
Today, the 5/6 students taught the Prep students how to make two characters have a conversation about Cross Country.
What did you learn?
  • Will – I learnt how to use the blocks in Scratch.
  • Tilly – Learning something new takes time and effort.
  • Eleanor – Scratch Jnr is very different to the other scratch but you still need to follow the patterns.
  • Ishaan – I changed colour of the names.
  • Elijah – It was harder than I expected it to be but I went back to check the possible solutions and tried some other ways.
  • Liam – I learnt how to spell new words.
  • Sian Huai – I learnt how to write on the iPad.
  • Assumpta – I learnt how to write big words.
  • Sienna – I learnt how to write on the iPad.

The Preps did such a fantastic job on Friday. They starred in the Learning Presentation at assembly and they were so beautiful at our Mother’s Day liturgy.
