Wushka Leveled Readers

Posted by bgommers | Posted in Literacy | Posted on April 19, 2020

To help support you during this Learning from Home period we have subscribed to a new digital reading program. This is not extra work for your child but an option for quality readers for them should you be running short of texts at their level.
The texts in the library are leveled texts similar to those students normally bring home in their take home folder. Students have access to books at their reading level.  There are accompanying activities and comprehension questions about the text. We are working on ways to hear the children read and move their reading levels on. If you they have mastered the books at the level set please email and a new level can be added.
We have added a link for Wushka Digital Readers  on the Learning Links page of the Blog and on the Learning from Home Week 2 document. Logins will be sent in the take home pack. We encourage the children to complete the quiz at the end. They may need help with reading the questions.
If you require any further assistance don’t hesitate to send an email.

Elkonin Boxes help to us to hear sounds in words. We are working on CVC words. (consonant/vowel/consonant) Use this technique with counters to hear the sounds and say the word. This will help with reading and writing

This clip  focuses on CVC words and is a bit of fun.

Please do not blame me when you can’t get this song out of your head.

Elkonin Boxes

Have a go at some of these words with your Elkonin Boxes.

cat   bed   pin   pot  pup

ran  leg   bit   hot   cup

When starting this technique we use a picture prompt- a picture of a dog, cat etc. We want the children to hear the sounds as they make and break the words.

You can try lots of others but at this stage just CVC words (consonant/vowel/consonant)  Use counters or buttons at this stage. We will move on to using magnetic letters  at a later stage.
