Balancing Screen Time

Today we did a cross age activity with our buddies. We talked about the importance of balancing our time in front of a screen. Playing games online and using consoles or games on a computer is great fun but you to need to make sure that your online world does not take over your life. With more and more mobile devices on the market it is easy and tempting to stay connected 24 hours a day, seven days a week, but it is also very important to know how and when to disconnect. Spending excessive amounts of time online can have significant impacts on your health, family and social life and on your academic performance at school.

We used Answer Garden to create a brainstorm of all of the screen devices that we have in our homes.

One of our groups discussed the difference between people who spend too much time online compared to people who balance their time. We drew pictures to show the difference in these people. We decided that people who spend too much time online may have a hunched back, a sore neck, red eyes, look tired and may be unfit. While a person who balances their time looks fit, reads books, interacts with their family and plays outdoors.

Another group discussed the amount of time that we spend online in comparison to the amount of time we spend doing other activities.

Our Lifestyle Audit included talking about how much time we spend eating, sleeping, playing games, doing homework, being active, relaxing and studying.

Our Technology Audit included talking about how much time we spend online for fun, for homework, sending emails, instant messaging, webcam chatting, social networking, watching videos, playing games, sending texts, talking on the phone, listening to music and taking photos.

Our final group were asked to answer the following questions;
Who do you think spends the most time on iPhones, Tablets or Computers in your house?
What’s your favourite thing to do with your family?
What is your favourite thing to do online?

Do you balance your time online?
